Hi hopefully you figured it out by now, :) if not on a mac hold command (on PC hold control; i think, going from memory) and click the square image associated to the layer, where you want the marching ants and not the text area. You will see the cursor change to a hand with a small square with dashed lines. Then click the new layer you created in the previous step. Hopefully this helped.

Thanks for the quick reply Isaac. The problem is I don’t get these marching ants around the text. I am actually selecting the Vector Smart Object layer with the selection tool as mentioned in the tutorial. I know I’m missing something obvious others seem to get. I spent about an hour to get it right but I’m going nowhere :( Please help.

You must select the text layer which is a smart object. You will then get a marquee (the “marching ants”) around the the text. You must then create a new layer on top of the “text” layer you just selected and airbrush in the marquee. This is done so that you don’t accidentally paint beyond the text. Hope this helps. I’ve been struggling to get the coloring book effect. Can someone correct me? To do airbrushing, I am selecting a brush and then both the text layer and the new layer which is expectedly wrong. Any help is appreciated?
