True – it would probably require some additional tweaking aside from just the Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer, but I think it would still be easier than reinventing the wheel so to speak.

One thing that I think works really well is utilizing the layer styles to color the icon, rather than the paint bucket for example. This would make it much easier to simply tweak some of the gradients through the layer styles by selecting new colors for some of the finer details.
