The fact that the client prefers the "lesser" design says that you're talented enough to create multiple quality designs with variety. Another, somewhat related, bit of advice I'd like to offer is that new designers may take slights to their designs personally. I learned early on to consider my design work as a product and focused on pleasing the client. I have my personal art that I can invest myself in emotionally. Great tutorial, by the way.
