1. Carbonmade
With over 500,000 hosted portfolios and over 8 million pieces of work posted on the site, Carbonmade is a top choice for displaying your work. Check out their featured portfolios to see Carbonmade in action.

The Pro version, at $9.99 a month, gives you unlimited image uploads, the ability to select other design themes, use a custom domain name and more.

I’ve noticed a lot of DIY web design companies putting their templates on portfolio sites as well. Seems to be a good triple whammy of linkbuilding, showing off work and social networking – far more effective than Facebook anyway.

Those are excellent advantages of having your portfolio site hosted instead of building and hosting yourself, RB!
Also, you don’t have to maintain a web hosting account/web server
and update/maintain your content management system (if you use one), making it a convenient solution.

Thanks for the link Ajay. However this article covers free online portfolio sites, but that link only has a 15-day trial and no “Free” plan. Looks like a great option nonetheless.

Wix is great, and it can effectively host web portfolios, and it’s easy to use. My dad, not the most computer-savvy person in the world, was able to set up a website without any help from me.
I’ve worked with Wix in the past, and I have nothing but great things to say about their team, which is important if you’re going to rely on any company to host your website.
Wix wasn’t included here because it isn’t a specialized portfolio hosting service; they can host many other types of websites.
Regarding your question about image quality being affected: A lot of free web services (Facebook, Pinterest, etc.) compress your image file sizes so that your images can load fast on a person’s web browser, and also to save the web service a significant amount of money in bandwidth resource costs.
I’ll see if I can find services that explicitly say they don’t do any sort of image compression, and if I find any, I’ll post them here.

If you’re photog or and artist, the easiest way to sell your prints is through Zenfolio. It’s NOT free but when you are serious about selling your, this is a no brainer because they do the fulfillment for you. I’m a photographer and this cuts out all the time it usually takes me to order prints for my clients.
My suggestion is to try the free demo on their site and tryout the price list because that is probably the most tedious part. There is a lot of flexibility in the pricing structure. When you are ready to take the plunge use this code to up to $25 OFF: W8Q-B9P-KVY

Hey there,
I am currently a Mechanical Engineering major with a minor in Professional and Technical Writing. In one of my PTW classes, we are required to create a digital portfolio showcasing our projects in various computer programs (InDesign, Photoshop, Framemaker, Word, Powerpoint, Prezi, Illustrator, etc). I have been researching various portfolio hosting websites for the past couple days and I am trying to find the best-suited one for my situation. I want to be able to keep it current and maintained beyond this class and integrate it into my tools for presenting myself and landing a job in the future.
It seems that most people who have a digital portfolio are artists, photographers, graphic designers, and web designers; this is evident in how most portfolio hosting sites are set up and how they work. I am trying to find one that would allow for possibly showing a screenshot of a project done in one of those various programs (maybe a brief caption about it) and then maybe post the link of my project in the actual program it was created in below the screenshot.
I would also like if I could upload resume and have an about me section.
Most examples of portfolios on sites like Carbonmade and Behance showcase and highlight images right off the bat rather than skills or what is being show (which makes sense for an artist or graphic designer).
If anyone could help me with making a decision on a portfolio site to use I would be very thankful! I just really don’t want to put a tremendous amount of time into a portfolio on one site to realize that I could have presented it better or used features in another hosting site to create a better portfolio. Thanks again.

Hi Michael, try foliodrop.com it’s used not only by photographers or designers, but also by architects and set builders. Foliodrop.com is totally free and you don’t have to subscribe to anything and can keep using the free version for ever, which includes: 150 images, own domain (domain mapping), customizable design and easy drag & drop interface.

If you’re looking for yet another option, I’d suggest you check out folio24.com. Although this is a shameless bit of self-promotion (I built Folio24), it is a strong competitor to carbonmade and offers a slightly different look, plus more customization options.
I’m also upgrading the next 25 people who join Folio24 to a paid membership for free.
